Thebe Events is currently preparing to stage the 2006 ARA Be Your Best Rock Challenge that will be held in five provinces in August and September.
Managed by Thebe Events on behalf of the Be Your Best Foundation for the second consecutive year, the project promotes positive lifestyle messages and is supported by the Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA).
In South Africa the project, which was initiated in Australia 25 years ago and is now produced in a number of countries around the world, focuses on issues related to the environment, HIV/Aids and sexuality, setting positive goals and alcohol and drug abuse.
Carol Weaving, managing director of the Thebe Exhibitions and Events Group says since its introduction in South Africa two years ago, the project has grown in leaps and bounds. “Today the Rock Challenge is huge and logistically challenging and Thebe Events plans to build on previous successes.”
The project grew from a two-night production at the Coca-Cola Dome – which is managed by Thebe Events - to ten show nights involving more than 135 schools from five provinces in 2005. Even greater growth is expected this year. Events involve actual musical performances by primary and secondary school learners based on relevant themes chosen by participating schools. Schools receive awards for aspects such as choreography, soundtrack, costumes and lighting.
“We are privileged to be in a position to contribute to social upliftment in South Africa through what we do best – the staging of professional events and productions,” says Weaving.
Research conducted in each country where the Rock Challenge has been staged shows that participation in the event has a positive impact on young people and their lifestyle choices.
“The ARA Be Your Best Rock Challenge impacts South Africa’s children on so many levels including arts and culture, education, social interaction, lifestyle decision-making and event production. Each participating school has workshop sessions exposing them to the process of event production and management, which make them feel part of it on a bigger scale. It gives the children a great thrill to see all the elements including choreography, music, lights and costumes come together with the expertise of Thebe Events,” says The ARA Be Your Best Rock Challenge Producer, Andrew Douglas.
This year’s ten events will be staged in Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Cape Town and Khayalitsha. Participating learners are transported to the venues, where they participate in educational activities that promote important health messages in an entertaining way.
More than 140 Rock Challenge events will be held in 50 locations across the world, including the United Kingdom, Australia, the USA and Germany.
Thebe Exhibitions and Events is part of the Thebe Tourism Group, a division of the Thebe Investment Corporation.
