The contest, which is named after Andrei Stenin, a special photo correspondent who died while on assignment, is a platform to discover new photojournalists and develop high standards for documentary photography in Russia and the world.

“It is a huge honour for us to be associated with this prestigious contest which underscores our company's human capital objective to encourage and promote young talent. It also contributes to facilitating the relationship between media companies based in BRICS member countries.", said Dr Iqbal Survé, Executive Chairman of Independent Media.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Visualizing a Path to Global Understanding” which is in line with the International Year of Global Understanding as proclaimed by UNESCO. The 2016 contest will showcase five categories for which young photographers can vie for awards: “My Country”, “World Colours. Harmony of Life”, “Portraits: A Hero of our Time”, “Top News” and “Sport”. Young photographers can convey this through their lens, reflecting a multi-dimensional understanding of the world in their entries.

Alexander Shtol, Rossiya Segodnya Director of Photography announced: “This year’s jury will be represented by many schools of photography in order to evaluate the young contestants in all their diversity. The newly created photo categories will allow participating photojournalists to illustrate different aspects of life in greater profundity than ever before.”

Three winners will be announced in each category. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes amount to 50,000, 35,000 and 25 000 rubles respectively (approx. R124,000, R174,000 and R249,000) with the Grand Prix set at 500,000 rubles (approx. R2,4m).

Applications can now be submitted to the website through March 22 2016. Photographers of 18 to 33 years of age qualify to take part. The awards ceremony and the opening of the corresponding photo exhibition is scheduled to take place on 30 August 2016 in Moscow.

The 2015 event proved to be the premier event for young photogaphers as it gathered more than 5,000 works from 54 countries in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the middle East, India and Southeast Asia, as well as from every corner of Russia stretching from Moscow and St Petersburg to Vladivostok and Nakhodka.
