Popcorn and movies bring joy on Mandela 'Day Week'

This Mandela 'Day Week' (why do a day when you can do a week?), HDI Youth Marketeers' initiative, Jozi Cinema Club, is bringing the magic and delight of the cinema experience to Jo'burg's township kids who wouldn't ordinarily get to go to a movie house. This is the second year of Jozi Cinema Club, and the 2015 programme will run over five days in Soweto, Diepsloot, Cosmo City and Tembisa, with the final screening Diepkloof on Sunday,19 July.
On Wednesday, 15 July, HDI Youth Marketeers, together with the GodFirst Church team, spent the afternoon serving the Jozi Cinema Club's first screening up at Soweto's Thembelenkosini Care Givers Centre. This year the initiative is screening the Disney hit movie, Big Hero 6. Further wonder and delight was brought to the children with a surprise visit from the loveable character, Hello Kitty, who is currently in South Africa on a quest to build a culture of kindness, #onekindthing at a time. She also donated juices to all the kids to accompany the popcorn, and round out the full movie experience.

"We are so grateful that you guys came to our centre and brought so much joy to the kids' lives, because we have never had something like this happen at our centre at all since we opened up," said founder and caregiver, Mama Khosi. "They couldn't contain their excitement as they entered the movie theatre," said Felicia Mlangeni, singer and event MC from HDI.

Most of the kids from the centre have had an unfortunate start to life, from poverty to abandonment, but after two hours of escaping their reality, immersed in a brought-to-your-doorstep cinema experience, their faces carried elated smiles of appreciation as they ran out of the movie, gave their tiny high fives and said their final goodbyes to the HDI crew and Hello Kitty.
