Animation Head of Discipline

Afda (The School of the Creative Economy) is the leading school of its kind in South Africa, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in motion picture medium, live performance, business innovation and technology. 

Afda is a full member of CILECT, the association of the world's major film and television schools.

Applications are invited for the position of animation head.

As the discipline lecturer for animation, Afda is looking for a committed and dedicated professional to lecture and provide support to undergraduate students. The position requires someone with drive and initiative who is able to motivate students and guide them into the world of animation. The candidate needs to demonstrate a willingness to embrace Afda’s unique pedagogy which is the basis of the interdisciplinary teaching at Afda. There is also a strong emphasis on cultural relevance within the teaching, and the need to help the students identify and develop a distinctive African voice for their productions. In this way, we hope to be able to contribute to nation building and build the foundations for a sustainable local film industry.

Key areas of animation competency:
  • Applicants must have minimum four years’ animation industry experience in a studio or in a regular freelance capacity.
Applicants must havethorough knowledge of the following software with the associated skills:
  • Autodesk Maya:
    1. Modelling
    2. Character Setup
    3. Animation
    4. Shading and texturing
    5. Lighting
    6. Rendering in Maya Software and Arnold
    7. Compositing
  • Adobe After effects:
    1. Compositing
    2. Animation
    3. Motion graphics
  • Adobe Animate CC:
    1. Animation
    2. Storyboarding
  • Adobe Photoshop, Generalist understanding of the following:
    1. Digital painting techniques beneficial
    2. Animation techniques within photoshop beneficial
    3. Texture generation for 3D content
  • Experience in Stop motion animation: (iStopmotion and Dragon currently in use)
Key areas of competency:
  • Marking of treatments, final review and assignment hand-ins
  • Availability to respond to student’s questions and one on one meetings (to be arranged by lecturer)
  • Conducting student consultations and reflective meetings
  • Preparing content and lesson plans for each term
  • Assessment registration for the term’s assessments
  • Working with counter-parts to ensure parity across all campuses on term outcomes
  • Attendance registers and class management administration
  • Timetable planning
  • Curriculum development
Requirements and personal attributes:
  • At least four years’ experience in the film and entertainment industry with practical competency in post-production
  • Minimum qualification: a relevant honours degree in film and/or media studies with specialisation in animation
  • Computer literacy
  • Highly developed organisational skills
  • Maturity to handle a range of situations
  • A meticulous and thorough nature
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Honest and trustworthy – committed to high integrity of excellence
  • Culturally aware and sensitive
