Job description

The account director should hold a university degree and have at least 10 years of experience in an ATL agency.

The account director should have built a strong knowledge of processes and procedures as well as considerable skills in understanding creativity and planning.  The account director is expected to be able to run his or her brands with limited assistance from the business director. They should be able to run meetings, see and seek business opportunities as well as identify potential problems. They must be able to develop very strong relationships with brand managers and marketing managers and their opinion in all advertising and communications matters should be welcomed by the client and agency alike.

A strong belief and well developed understanding of good creative is essential, along with the ability to guide the creative department towards the best work and the easiest sell with the client.

Their business acumen should be well developed and they will have developed a strong understanding of the cause and effect on the brands, relationship and business with regard to the actions of the client and the agency.

The account director should have a healthcare, life science or similar qualification, experience in medical or healthcare advertising, particularly with scheduled products. An understanding of the South African healthcare system, as well as the various stakeholders and their role in the client’s market. A strong understanding of the South African medical regulatory framework and the impact this has on the work the agency produces. The Account Director should have experience in working with medical regulatory departments to ensure artwork approval. An understanding and experience in medical referencing. The confidence and expertise to understand and interpret clinical trials, as sometimes required by client as well as the confidence and expertise to engage with client’s key opinion leaders (KOLs), as sometimes required by client.

Their strategic input and ability to offer a good opinion is critical and they must have proven problem-solving abilities.

This position is in an upward state of transition towards Business Unit Director.
  • Management of a portfolio in a way that consistently achieves all the required set targets and deliverables
  • Be able to develop proficiency skills with direct reports
  • Ensuring that all systems, rules and set procedures are adhered to
  • Management of project deadlines
  • Attendance at all relevant client and supplier meetings
  • Attendance and contribution to monthly charge-out meetings with production and the finance department
  • Ensuring that relevant staff in all departments (creative, planning, production) are updated regularly on all aspects relating to the business of clients
  • Identification of pro-active opportunities on brands
  • Coordination and delivery of major presentations to clients
  • Assisting with new business development
  • Identification and optimisation of new business opportunities
  • Chairing of client review meetings
  • Monitoring and communication of industry trends and account movements, and attendance at selected seminars, courses etc.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of effectiveness of junior members of the team
  • Rendering of strategic planning function as required
  • Managing team to ensure PO’s/CE’s approvals are received timeously before monthly billing closure
  • Budgetary responsibility (achievement of revenue and adherence to expenditure budgets) for agency and client, including ensuring timeous billing procedures are adhered to
  • Attendance at weekly status meetings
  • Attendance and contribution to immersions and other field work on a regular basis
  • Knowledge and experience of the client’s consumer sales environment
  • Assisting the strategic planning department in preparation of competitive reviews, creative sell presentations and any other projects deemed necessary of the planning department
  • Preparation of concise, accurate and motivating creative briefs
  • Approval of non-conceptual briefs
  • Coordination of brand audits
  • Assistance with yearly budget compilations
  • Compilation of quarterly timesheet recons
  • Seminar/conference organisation
  • Contribution to agency publications
  • Client entertainment
