Through the eye of the storm: an ad man's guide to survival in 2009
[Mike Abel] Economics 101. We all know economies are cyclical. Anyone who has been around for a few decades or more has seen this truth first-hand. And while this article may not accommodate a lot of the complexities pertaining to the current climate, it will talk to how we can choose to respond. I'm hoping the wonderful, colloquial notion of “no worries” wins the day.

Introducing Nic Billington

Introducing Nic Billington
[Ruth Cooper] Durbanite musician Nic Billington could be the Britney of the South African pop world, with Billington's Youtube cover of Gimme More being handpicked by the pop princess herself to appear on her website Billington seems to be well on his way. With boyish good looks and a fierce marketing and branding approach not to mention the schmaltz and corny charm of any self respecting Pop star Nic should be burning it up on the modern dance and pop airwaves in no time. We chatted via e-mail to him about making it in the SA music industry and his future plans.

Social network approach to viralising articles

Social network approach to viralising articles
[Matthew Buckland] One of the key viral elements of content websites, such as news sites, are the “email to a friend” links you see on many articles. But they're also an outdated viral element.

Roger, this is an excellent article, thank you.

With print space decreasing, PR practitioners need to learn the tools and ideas behind online PR. There are still so few agencies that really understand social media and webPR.

Of course, traditional PR will always be there, but going online can give incredible value to clients.

How do you get in there when there's no “there”?
[Roger Hislop] Once upon a time - a better time, a wonderful time, a time of big fat juicy magazines and hefty newspapers that landed with a satisfying thud on your doorstep - PR agencies could get the results they needed to keep the clients happy, and pick up a healthy cheque every month.

Thank you first of all to Dave Mac for an insightful article and promoting what we at myweek are passionate about.

@ Reader: with the relaunch of myweek it was felt that the brand had traction in the market. That, coupled with that myweek is a guide to your weekly events and entertainment options, convinced us to keep the name.

This is a fascinating environment to work in, tying in online with mobile and print into one single product across a multitude of platforms providing easy access to locally relevant infotainment.

Getting Rammed

Getting Rammed
[Ruth Cooper] This year's Ramfest marked somewhat of a departure from previous festivals, the heavy metal was toned down and a separate stage, the Black Parade Stage, was set up for the heavy's while the main and bigger stage was dedicated to the more mainstream acts. This is not to say the fest was any less hardcore in fact by far the maddest mosh pit I was involved in surprisingly belonged to the Dirty Skirts.

Be uplifted by Slumdog Millionaire
[Ruth Cooper] Believe the hype about Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle and based on the book Q&A by Vikas Swarup, Slumdog Millionaire totally deserves all the praise and awards it has been receiving. I really can't fault this movie at all its beautifully shot, interestingly told, funny, heart wrenching and intriguing add to this a killer sound track and you have a movie that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout.

A worldwide corporate metamorphosis
[Naseem Javed] Why our world suddenly became a massive junkyard, crowded with junky-ideas on junky-promises with junky-finances, is now where brand new corporate philosophies and structures will harshly collide with the wide range of old business models.

Brand Joburg shifts gears, thanks to top motor guru
[Dr Nikolaus Eberl] Paris is romance, New York is energy, Milan is style, Tokyo is modernity, Washington is power, Barcelona is culture, and Rio is fun. Many times, a city brand is reduced to a single attribute in the mind of the global audience, and the brand is the context in which messages and news are received.

Battered and bruised at Ramfest 2009

Battered and bruised at Ramfest 2009
[Sindy Peters] "Ouch," she yelled, as the Hunters Dry GLASS bottle hit her right cheek bone. The GLASS bottle then proceeded to deflect onto her companions shoulder causing a bruise before proceeding to the floor. The companion suddenly felt two nasty bumps on her other arm. She first thought it was dirt, but alas no - she should be so lucky. She had been burned on the arm by a cigarette. No, this is not a sadistic story of a crazed lunatic. It was all part and parcel of our very eventful Ramfest 2009 experience. By Sunday morning we all looked like we'd been tossed on the wrong side of the curb, but by "George" it was fun!

Toil and trouble with Uys's MacBeki

Toil and trouble with Uys's MacBeki
[Sindy Peters] Sometimes political situations in this wonderful country of ours really do play out like dramatic Shakespearean plays with twists and turns, betrayals and love affairs and in the end it all turns out to be a bit of a joke. Pieter-Dirk Uys has done just this with MacBeki as his written work comes to life on stage making the current South African political divisions hilariously funny using Shakepeare's famous tragedy, "MacBeth" as the scene and setting, the plot however is thicker than Shakespeare could ever have imagined.
