Unilever to buy GSK's Horlicks unit for $3.8bn
Unilever needs to bring back Horlicks to SA. Seriously, why does these big companies do this? Every time something becomes popular and a household favourite, they stop production.

#BizTrends2020: Waste management in the hospitality sector in 2020
Hi Lidia, you've raised a valid question/point. Do you know what other guest houses, hotels and Airbnbs are doing when it comes to recyling & waste management in Swellendam? There must be a FB community group where we can start asking but also to network with other property owners and get proactive in rallying everyone to put pressure on the local municipalities.

There must be a community group on FB where we can start asking these questions about where to recycle and how others in the town are going about it. You've raised an excellent point and perhaps its time to really rally & put pressure on municipalities in areas outside of major cities.

#BizTrends2020: Trends for the near future
You are off base with the "Youth Power" 'trend.' Its not youth power but youth being used by vested interests. When Greta Thunberg emerged, I asked myself "how did this young girl take the stage and get top billing?" Does anyone really think that this was not staged and backed by powerful players like George Soros who were looking for a sympathetic face to push their agenda? And then a Peace Prize thrown into the mix? Amazing. Yep, just try yourself to replicate Greta's rise to stardome. Does not work unless there is insider backing -- which just goes to diminish the whole matter. Actually makes you cynical too. Next time some 15 year old takes the international stage, just know it does not happen by accident or simply on merit.

POPI and your website security
Great article. So now that we are in 2020, what are your views now? I have still not heard much about Popi. Has it actually been implemented? Are companies being audited?

Independent experts: Your saviour or your sinker?
Allon: Thanks for making me consider this model from a broader perspective than usual. There are so many permutations and variables, as you say, and your second last paragraph is key advice. Three additional points are top of mind for me as a long-term independent operator. 1. The knowledge of the person employing the independent operator has to be sufficient in order to engage the right person for that particular company and problem. Frequently, a small company has not yet established the nature of the gap nor how best to fill it and someone permanent could, equally, be unsuitable. 2. A dedicated independent operator is unlikely to jump ship for the next, higher paying job. Our reputation is only as good as the success of our last job and we are results and relationship driven. 3. A successful relationship between the small company and the independent consultant is founded on trust and respect. In other words, there is no 'control' or 'supervision' – the words used in the Income Tax Act – and there should be little necessity to 'manage these independent experts'. This brings me back to point 1 and the expertise, rather than 'capacity' of those engaging the consultant and their ability to step away from control and supervision. As for 'cultural glue' – that is dynamic and reliant on trust and respect.

South Africans should work together to make the country a destination of choice
Great article that offers a balanced view on the challenges of the SA tourism industry. I believe that other niche tourism sub-sectors, such as medical tourism (administered through the SA private healthcare sector) need to be actively promoted by our government's Department of Tourism. Medical tourism benefits mainstream tourism in that in softens its seasonality as people needing quality life-saving treatment, don't care about warm weather. Furthermore, the average medical traveler (who generally arrives with a companion), spends an average of 15 days in the country (including recovery).Imagine the opportunity that lies in each medical traveler to South Africa to the guesthouse owner and the restaurants close by!For more information on medical travel to South Africa, visit med-afrique.com
