Plascon Prism Awards plum new project for Decorex SA

Decorex SA added a multi-coloured string to its bow of special projects, being awarded the honour to coordinate the 2009 Plascon Prism Awards.
Expect a shopping mall inspired by a beehive as nature and all things green take centre stage. The Plascon Prism Awards marks its tenth year with a theme ‘Regenerate. Renew' signalling that it's time for change and to embrace nature's way with designs that are one with the planet.

“We are delighted to be associated with the Plascon Prism Awards as coordinators,” says Cairey Slater, general manager: exhibitions at Decorex SA. “The aims of this important award system - to champion local design and to influence green design - are close to home. This is about supporting budding design and architectural talent with a professional showcase and stimulating interaction with their future peers. The awards also focus on inspiring change through the use of colour, innovation and technology.”

She points out the natural link between the Plascon Prism Awards and Decorex. “Decorex's close working relationship with Plascon spans 16 years. Having them on board as sponsors and active partners at the Decorex shows countrywide has always been most inspirational, as they continue to stretch our colour horizons.”

The Plascon Prism Awards will be a highlight at Decorex Joburg 2009. Not only will the finalists see their creative plans exhibited, the winners will also be announced at the show, giving the talented young designers the chance to shine at the country's premier décor and design event.

Samantha van den Bergh, project coordinator explains the challenge set by the theme ‘Regenerate. Renew'. “The three categories are Retail & Commercial (Shopping Mall, Retail Outlet, Airport, Office); Residential (Urban or Rural) and Public/Social Initiative (Shelters, Hospitals, Municipal Departments, Stadia. Entrants are challenged to present a plan of a space created by using natural biodegradable materials, with inspiration to be taken from the evolved precision of nature. Natural forms such as beehives, nests and burrows are suggested as influences, with judges looking for entries that achieve excellence in both appearance and function."

A core part of the brief is to select colours from the Plascon Colour Forecast 2009, which is a collection of colours rooted in nature and the life forces air, water, fire and earth.

Winners will be selected by some of the country's most influential design experts in three categories including public buildings, residential and retail/commercial spaces. The overall winner will be awarded a five-day trip to 100% Design Exhibition in London. The overall winner's institution will also receive a R10 000 grant for 2010. The category winners will each receive R5000 and a colour hamper for their institution.

The judging process involves a preliminary evaluation from a team of thought leaders from the DesignMind website, a networking and information site, for industry professionals. The finals will be judged by industry professionals, based on innovation, aesthetics, use of colour, overall insight and application of the concept.

Closing date for entries: 29th May 2009. For more information contact Samantha van den Berg at 082 574 2014, tel 011 782 7748 or email her at .
