In the early ‘90s when the oppressive apartheid regime fell and political prisoners were set free, South African youth began the celebration. But they weren't bumping to struggle songs or American imports. In the name of freedom and pride South Africa's next generation created their own beat and called it kwaito.

The ground-breaking sounds of kwaito revolutionised the music industry and icons like Arthur, Oskido and Mdu changed the way South Africans would dress, dance and even created a new township lingo.

To recognise these artists and their contribution to the industry, MTV base has compiled a top 10 list profiling the icons and legends of kwaito.

The countdown features commentary, insights and opinions from a range of famous South African personalities, including DJ Cleo, Bricks, comedian Loyiso Gola, Gang of Instrumentals, R&B star Loyisio, music journalist Kabomo Vilakazi, social blogger and socialite Mika Stefano, to name a few. They'll give you the inside scoop on some of the artists, revealing secrets and goss' that should never be said out loud, let alone on TV.
