Built by property developer Atterbury, work on the R130 million hotel, which boasts a ground floor and four upper levels, began in October 2013. It is the 16th City Lodge branded hotel in the 55-hotel City Lodge Hotel Group, comprising 52 hotels in South Africa across the Courtyard Hotel, City Lodge Hotel, Town Lodge and Road Lodge brands. The group also owns three hotels in Kenya and Botswana.

Significantly, City Lodge Hotel Waterfall City is the first new hotel the group has opened in South Africa since 2010 as there has been some over-supply locally and it has spent the past few years establishing a position outside South Africa.

The hotel has been developed as part of a long-term land and building lease agreement with around R40m of the total development cost allocated to furniture, fittings and equipment. Interestingly, half of its rooms offer bathrooms with baths and showers, the other half has a shower only option, mirroring a growing international trend.

It is located at the entrance to the prestigious Waterfall City mixed-use development, about 300m from the Allandale off-ramp on the N1 freeway between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

City Lodge Waterfall City represents the second time the group has partnered with developer Atterbury Property Developments, a division of JSE-listed Attacq Ltd. It partnered with Atterbury for the development of City Lodge Lynnwood within the Lynnwood Bridge mixed-use complex in Pretoria, which opened in 2010.

Waterfall City is one of Africa's biggest multi-use property developments and is being developed around the R3.5 billion super-regional Mall of Africa shopping centre situated within the 311ha Waterfall Business Estate.
