Algerian press goes mobile

Kuwait telephone mobile company El Wataniya, which operates in Algeria under the brand name of Nedjma, has initiated new services to readers on its network.

Nedjma is offering the public the possibility to read newspaper content of the first three titles of Al Khabar, El Moudjahid and Competition, before extending services to purchasing air ticket and hotel bookings, using mobile phones.

For his part, Joseph Jad director of Nedjma underlines that his company does not interfere in the papers' content, but it plays a carrier role in providing news free of charge to its subscribers. Also, adds Jad,"we are ready to enlarge our offer to the rest of Algerian public and private press."

Meanwhile the Director General Ali Djerri of Al Khabar (one of the leading private Arabic speaking newspapers in the country) affirms that "the agreement will add a new dimension to the press, it enables readers to consult articles anywhere, anytime." He stresses also that the agreement will be implemented to the two other mobile operators, Mobilis and Djezzy.

On the other hand, Jad states that "the acquisition of Al Wataniya" by the Qatari telecom company, Qtel, will not change the policies and strategy of Nedjma. He reveals that his company has agreed on program action and it is now securing financial capacities to implement its strategy.
