Falsified documents lead to vehicle being confiscated

A physical check to validate the original identity of a vehicle is crucial in order to avoid your vehicle being confiscated.

On 28 January 2020, a Hyundai H100 arrived at a DataDot Fitment Centre for a microdot fitment. The fitment centre diligently followed procedure and noticed that the vehicle was already fitted with microdots and that the licencing papers looked falsified.

The fitment centre removed DataDot microdots from the vehicle and established that the microdot information did not match the visible VIN number on the vehicle or the VIN number on the licence document. With immediate effect, the fitment centre contacted DataDot with the suspicion that the vehicle could be stolen. DataDot together with police members successfully seized the vehicle as it was leaving the fitment centre. After an investigation, they were able to establish that the vehicle had indeed been stolen.

This is an example of how only relying on documentation to validate the original identity of a vehicle is not always enough. Documents can be, and often are, falsified so a physical inspection of the vehicle enables the original identity of the vehicle to be validated.

Dealerships can register with VehicleFacts – an online platform which enables them to validate the original identity of motor vehicles being traded in. Registration includes training in physically checking the vehicle for microdots and removal of the microdot in order to check VIN detail. The VehicleFacts platform also assists dealerships in ensuring compliance with the Second-hand Goods Act by recording the microdot particulars on the acquisition and disposal register – which is then printable from the VehicleFacts electronic system.
