South Africa, as the current chair of SADC, will host the meeting which will see the minister discussing co-operation in science, technology and innovation as well as adopting the business plan for the SADC science and technology desk.
Delegates will also discuss a focused approach in implementing the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan and SADC Protocol on STI which was approved by SADC Heads of State in August 2008.
The plan is designed to provide strategic direction for SADC programmes, projects and activities and is underpinned by the SADC mission statement which is to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth and socio-economic development through efficient production systems, deeper co-operation and integration, good governance and durable peace and security.
This will ensure that the region emerges as a competitive and effective player in international relations and the world economy.
South Africa in its capacity as SADC chair, will also present a plan of action for science, technology and innovation aimed at delivering on key aspects of the STI agenda during its chairmanship.
According to the statement issued by the Department of Science and Technology, the key deliverables will be implemented jointly with SADC partners and that in some instances other member states will lead in the implementation.
In line with South Africa's foreign policy imperative of capacity building in the SADC, South Africa has seconded an official to the SADC secretariat in Botswana.
The seconded official will co-ordinate the STI programmes and projects.
