The ABF returns to Cape Town

The long awaited return of the Advertising Benevolent Fund (ABF) to Cape Town took place recently with a golf day at the River Club Golf and Conference Centre in Observatory. Despite poor weather, the event was well attended, and the industry will not forget a great day out that included more than the regular intake of beer the ABF requires from its attendees.
As the rains gently soaked the par 3 course that awaited a ‘scratch' field, Giles Shepherd, President of the ABF welcomed guests as he detailed the intentions of the ABF and its commitment to the Cape Town industry.

Breakfast and sherries were served before the field set out for the Cape's infamous storms.

It wasn't long before the battered field returned to take part in what they know how to do best - compete in the bar. Birdies and hole in ones were debated before one of the ABF's assisted members offered golfers a head massage they would never forget.

It didn't stop there though. The ABF then included a full golf clinic conducted by golf professionals from the club. While some of the senior ABF members made sure the bar stools were warm, visitors learnt to adapt their putting and chipping game before getting some great advice on their longer games (all under cover and protected from the Cape Doctor).

Prizes were handed out, lunch was served and drinks were had (into the evening) wrapping up what was an exciting return to the Cape Town market.

Giles Shepherd summed up the day: “The ABF is committed and excited about getting more involved in Cape Town. Our local committee, headed by Riaan Kriel, is determined to raise the awareness of the ABF in this city and its passionate industry. Although we're always keen to have fun while raising funds for the organisation, we need to be aware that the ABF is also a very serious institution that plays a critical relieving role for those in our industry that are in trouble financially.

"As we head into tough economic times, there will be more pressure for assistance and support, but to do that we need more support from those that aren't in trouble. The Cape Town golf day was designed to raise awareness for those contributions, thank existing members and all those that took part. It was a wonderful success. We would urge the industry to get more involved and help down here in Cape Town, and have fun doing it. Who knows whose families might need our support in the future?”
