Despite what a certain drumming gorilla will have everyone believe, there is, in fact, another way to find joy... and it's courtesy of Egg + Humanoid's latest TV ad, the crazy yet utterly entertaining “Ultimate Goal” for Coke.
Directed by Greg Rom in conjunction with creative masterminds Paul Warner, Brad Reilly and Gareth Paul of The Royal Metropole, the ad further entrenches Coke's strong association with football and South Africa's youth ahead of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
The 60' spot, the final in a long line of commercials created for the campaign that also included a 45' and four 20's - three of which were directed by up-and-coming Humanoid, Verushka Vogt - brings a sensational and unforgettable end to the first chapter in the story of our lead character, Mfundo, a young filmmaker commissioned by Coke to make them a football ad.
A plethora of CG, wire-work, crowd duplication, gymnasts, acrobats, dancers and a goat for good measure, the “Ultimate Goal” pits Mfundo and his oddball team of reality defying soccer players against an evil team of football henchmen playing for all the glory the beautiful game has to offer. Glory that, in the end... well, you'll just have to watch it.
The main shoot took place over three icy nights at Orlando Stadium and included three extremely patient camera units and three hundred freezing extras, all happily coming together to create something truly spectacular.
But wait, there's more...
Just when you thought there couldn't possibly be more happiness to talk about, Mfundo, a real-life film student who won the lead in the campaign and also worked under Greg throughout the entire process, will be doing an internship at Egg Jhb after he graduates at the end of the year.
Happiness, we declare you officially open.
