In its statement the SABC says: "The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) can confirm that an intruder broke into its Bloemfontein office this morning, vandalising the building near its studios.

"On confrontation, a fight broke out, and a security officer fired a shot at the suspect, injuring his lower body. The suspect was taken to Pelonomi Hospital. No security officers or SABC employees on duty sustained any injuries during the incident. A case (686/01/2022) was opened with the Bloemfontein Hawkes and is being led by Captain Cynthia Moleko, who can be reached on 082 067 5225."

The SABC also reported that the suspect had also defaced corridor walls with graffiti and allegedly interfered with the broadcast satellites.

In the statement the SABC also commends its security officers for containing the situation and preventing further damage to its staff and property.

It adds that the case is now being investigated by the Hawks, who together with the bomb squad seized a number of suspicious parcels from the suspect.

In a further news report from the SABC it also says that the “police are also investigating a separate case after a Facebook user allegedly incited the public to burn the Lesedi FM offices”. Prior to this the police have been investigating death threats against Lesedi FM journalists.

According to Hawks provincial spokesperson, Christopher Singo once they have interviewed the suspect they will give more details.
