Angola elections - no independent oversight, media bias

Luanda: Angola's parliamentary elections on 5 September 2008, reportedly won by the ruling MPLA party, were marred by numerous irregularities, Human Rights Watch said today, 15 September 2008. Preliminary results indicate that the MPLA won more than 80% of the vote, the first held in Angola since 1992.

Angolan media monopoly threatens election fairness

Before Friday's Angolan elections, campaigners were busy touring the country competing for voter support. The last election in 1992 pushed Angola back into a long and bloody civil war that killed over a million people, with many more displaced. It also ushered in an era of severe repression of dissent within political and media realms.

CNN Multichoice African Journalist 2008 finalists

Finalists in the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2008 Competition were announced today, 15 May 2008, by Azubuike Ishiekwene, Chair of the independent judging panel. This year the competition, now in its 13th year, received a record 1912 entries from 44 countries throughout the African continent, including French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa.

African nations agree to $1 billion Indian satellite project

A critical mass of countries are signing on to a plan for India to invest $1 billion in the Pan-African e-Network satellite project, a joint initiative with the Africa Union aimed at developing the region's information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure.
