Local members mark centenary of press freedom demonstrations

About 100 journalists, human rights activists and media personnel gathered in Cairo on 29 March, 2009 to mark the "100th Anniversary of Press Freedom Demonstrations in Egypt 1909", an event organised by IFEX members in Egypt the Arab Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) and the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights (EOHR).

Egypt: Concerns with draft Broadcast Law

Article 19 and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information have voiced concerns with the draft Broadcast Law released by the Egyptian authorities. An analysis of the draft law conducted by Article 19 highlights these concerns, including the fact that the oversight body, the National Audiovisual Broadcasting Regulation Authority, would be controlled by the government.

Writer instructed not to write about military matters without permission

The Military Prosecutor General decided to release journalist and writer Abd Al Khaliq Farouq on 8 July after two and a half hours of questioning. However, Farouq was instructed to not address any issues related to the military without permission from the concerned bodies.

Attempt to restrict satellite broadcasting, electronic media continues

Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) has spoken out against the efforts of the ministerial council of Arab information ministers, held in the headquarters of the Arab League from 20 - 21 June 2008, to further restrict satellite television broadcasting.

CNN Multichoice African Journalist 2008 finalists

Finalists in the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2008 Competition were announced today, 15 May 2008, by Azubuike Ishiekwene, Chair of the independent judging panel. This year the competition, now in its 13th year, received a record 1912 entries from 44 countries throughout the African continent, including French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Egyptian court says no to websites' ban

African nations agree to $1 billion Indian satellite project

A critical mass of countries are signing on to a plan for India to invest $1 billion in the Pan-African e-Network satellite project, a joint initiative with the Africa Union aimed at developing the region's information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure.
