NEW YORK, US: Global consumer confidence increased one index point last quarter to 89, while Europe led confidence declines in 24 of the region's 27 measured markets, according to fourth quarter 2011 global consumer confidence findings from Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and insights into what consumers watch and buy.

Leading telecoms operators outperform broader economy 2011

LONDON, UK: The 40 leading telecoms operating groups out-performed the global economy by 5.0 ppt (percentage points), according to the latest research from Informa Telecoms & Media. Based on data taken from the recently published World Telecoms Financial Benchmarks (WTFB) service, the largest operators, as measured by consolidated total revenues, increased revenues for the second quarter of 2011 by 6.8% year-on-year to reach US$327.6 billion*.

Mobile hotspots in Africa - Q3 2011

In Q3 of 2011 a total of 3.2 billion ads were served across continental Africa. This continues a year of growth across Continental Africa characterised by 135% more traffic compared to 2010. Seven countries drew traffic in excess of 100 million ads served per quarter and three countries (South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya) saw more than half a billion ads served in Q3 2011.

Journos train to make news out of numbers

Around twenty journalists completed a daylong training course in Lilongwe, Malawi on Friday 11 November 2011, where they learnt skills to turn data and numbers into news stories. The training, funded by the Hewlett Foundation through the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), enables journalists to use research and data to find and strengthen stories.

Africa is world's second most connected region by mobile subscriptions

LONDON, UK: Africa has become the second most connected region in the world in terms of mobile subscription count, up from fourth place at the end of 2010, according to new research by Informa Telecoms & Media, and the number of mobile subscriptions in Africa is expected to reach one billion in 2016.

ILO proposes monetary policies for Malawi's employment creation

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has released a report on Malawi which is trying to establish on how monetary policy instruments can be used to encourage Malawi onto a path of employment-generating growth. The report titled Macroeconomic policy for employment creation: The Case for Malawi released last month has identified three policy areas for consideration.

Kaspersky Lab releases Global IT Security Risks Survey results

MOSCOW, RUSSIA / JOHANNESBURG, SA: 91% of companies globally have experienced an IT threat over the last 12 months according to Kaspersky Lab's Global IT Security Risks Survey. In fact, over the period, 61% of the attacks were due to malware infection, 48% of companies have noticed an increase in the number of cyber attacks and 30% of companies have lost critical business data.
