EABL takeover deal frozen by UK court

A bid by East African Breweries Limited (EABL) to end its partnership with competitor, South African Breweries Miller (SABMiller), and join another brewer was put on hold by a UK court. In a ruling passed on Tuesday, 18 August 2009, Diageo - majority shareholder in EABL with a 50% stake - and SABMiller were ordered to begin an arbitration process.

To be the toast of Tanzania

Alcohol producer and distributor Distell is spearheading a viticultural initiative in Tanzania expected to enable wine farmers in the Dodoma highlands to double their crops within three to five years — and may yet be developing a feasible model for rolling out vineyard productions across sub-Saharan Africa.

Samsung's internet enabled TV hits East Africa market

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a flat-panel TV with a provision to access content on various websites, in East Africa. The 29mm LED TV was launched in Kenya at the end of June 2009.

Another South African retailer enters African market

Within three years of its establishment in South Africa, national scooter and motorcycle retailer Vuka Scuta continues to revolutionise the transport industry and is now set to capture the African market. The expansion into the African continent beyond South Africa has been launched with Vuka Africa opening its first outlet in Maputo, Mozambique this month.

In addition to the company's offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg, this adds to its' affiliate relationships with Quadrant Company in Lagos and TRACCS in North Africa.

Walkman is GSMA Best Handset

Sony Ericsson's W910i Walkman phone strutted off with the prize for Best Handset the GSM Association's 13th Global Mobile Awards 2008. The ceremony was held on 12 February in Barcelona, Spain, as part of the Mobile World Congress.
