SA short wins AiM film competition

A silent experimental documentary from South Africa won the second annual Africa in Motion (AiM) short film competition. Paul Emmanuel's 3SAI: A Rite of Passage was screened as part of the Africa in Motion Film Festival, held 22 October - 1 November 2009, at the UK African Film Festival, which takes place at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Call to enter 2010 D&AD

The call to enter the 2010 D&AD Awards and the 23 jury foremen were announced yesterday, Monday, 19 October 2009. Network# BBDO Johannesburg's Mike Schalit will lead the Radio Advertising jury.

AiM 2009 launches festival programme

Africa in Motion (AiM) 2009, the UK African film festival, returns to Edinburgh's Filmhouse for its fourth edition, taking place from 22 October to 1 November 2009. The festival includes about 50 classic and contemporary films - long, short, fiction and documentary.

Call for Aluta Film Festival submissions

Organisers of the Aluta Film Festival, a South African township cinema event, are calling for entries from South Africa and international filmmakers for seventh edition of the festival in 2010. Entries close on Monday, 30 November 2009, and winners will be screened at the festival in Kimberley, Northern Cape, 22-28 February 2010.

African films screened at DIFF 09

The 30th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) plans to feature 77 African films (including South African), comprising nine feature films, 28 documentaries and 49 short films. DIFF 2009 will take place 23 July - 2 August 2009 at various venues across the Durban vicinity.

Homeless World Cup calls on filmmakers

Nike and The Homeless World Cup are offering a US$50,000 fund to produce a short film (5 minutes, no more than 10 minutes) capturing the "Spirit, Unity, Victory" of the Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup. The event takes place from 6 - 13 September 2009 at Arena Civica, Sempione Park.

SA film wins recognition in Cannes

"Izulu Lami" (My Secret Sky), a feature film directed by South Africa's Madoda Ncayiyana, received the ‘Dikalo Best Feature Film' prize at the International Pan African Film Festival, held in Cannes in April 2009.

SAE calls for African Animation Scholarship applicants

The SAE Institute is calling for African candidates for the African Animation Scholarship programme. SAE Cape Town is offering 10 scholarships for sub-Saharan African students and five South African students.

African film awards honour SA

One of Africa's most prestigious film awards, the African Movie Academy Awards, recently honoured two young South African actors. Litha Booi and Lungelo Dhladhla, both leading actors in the film "Gugu and Andile", were lauded for their outstanding performances.

Encounters announces African Trailblazer for 2009

Encounters has named the African Trailblazer for this years International Trailblazer Awards to be held at MIPDOC 2009, running from 28 - 29 March at the Hotel Intercontinental Carlton in Cannes, ahead of MIPTV. This year the African Trailblazer, Craig Matthew is one among seven international filmmakers representing Europe, the Middle East, North America, Australia, Korea and Japan.
