"Izulu Lami" (My Secret Sky), a feature film directed by South Africa's Madoda Ncayiyana, received the ‘Dikalo Best Feature Film' prize at the International Pan African Film Festival, held in Cannes in April 2009.

SAE calls for African Animation Scholarship applicants

The SAE Institute is calling for African candidates for the African Animation Scholarship programme. SAE Cape Town is offering 10 scholarships for sub-Saharan African students and five South African students.

African film awards honour SA

One of Africa's most prestigious film awards, the African Movie Academy Awards, recently honoured two young South African actors. Litha Booi and Lungelo Dhladhla, both leading actors in the film "Gugu and Andile", were lauded for their outstanding performances.

Encounters announces African Trailblazer for 2009

Encounters has named the African Trailblazer for this years International Trailblazer Awards to be held at MIPDOC 2009, running from 28 - 29 March at the Hotel Intercontinental Carlton in Cannes, ahead of MIPTV. This year the African Trailblazer, Craig Matthew is one among seven international filmmakers representing Europe, the Middle East, North America, Australia, Korea and Japan.

SA media veteran scoops commonwealth book award

DURBAN: South African writer and media veteran Mandla Langa has scooped the Commonwealth Writers' Prize Best Book Award in the Africa Region 2009 for The Lost Colours of the Chameleon. This was announced on Wednesday, 11 March 2009, at The Time of the Writer Festival held in Durban.

Director and scriptwriter, Michael Raeburn's Triomf has been selected for the FESPACO 2009 - the Pan-African Film and TV Festival official competition. FESPACO, one of Africa's largest film festival established in 1969, showcases African cinema and television.

FESPACO 2009 call for entries

The 21st edition of the Pan-African Film and TV Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) will take place 28 February - 7 March 2009 with "African cinema: tourism and cultural heritage" as the theme. The upcoming edition will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the festival and the 20th anniversary for the African Film Library of Ouagadougou.

Open Air Cinema helps educate, entertain Africa
