Coca-Cola - Best Global Brand 2009

NEW YORK, US: The Best Global Brands 2009 rankings were announced late last week by Interbrand, in conjunction with Business Week. The 10 top brands (in highest ranking order) are Coca-Cola; IBM; Microsoft; GE; Nokia; McDonalds; Google; Toyota; Intel; and Disney.

Engen, Kenolkobil acquire Zim Shell, BP ventures

Engen Petroleum, South Africa's refined petroleum products company, and Kenolkobil, an indigenous African petroleum marketing company in the East and Central African region, have signed a sale and purchase agreement to jointly acquire all the shares in Shell Zimbabwe (private) and BP Zimbabwe (private).

2009 Jet Community Awards entries double

According to the organisers of the Southern Africa grassroots awards programme, the annual Jet Community Awards, entries have doubled since the 2008 competition. Almost 1000 entries were received from community projects and non-profit organisations (NGOs) from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.

EABL takeover deal frozen by UK court

A bid by East African Breweries Limited (EABL) to end its partnership with competitor, South African Breweries Miller (SABMiller), and join another brewer was put on hold by a UK court. In a ruling passed on Tuesday, 18 August 2009, Diageo - majority shareholder in EABL with a 50% stake - and SABMiller were ordered to begin an arbitration process.

ARISE partners with Cape Town Fashion Week

JOHANNESBURG: African Fashion International (AFI) has secured a five-year partnership for Cape Town Fashion Week with ARISE magazine, following the inaugural ARISE Africa Fashion Week in June 2009. ARISE Cape Town Fashion Week will take place from 20 - 22 August 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Another South African retailer enters African market

Within three years of its establishment in South Africa, national scooter and motorcycle retailer Vuka Scuta continues to revolutionise the transport industry and is now set to capture the African market. The expansion into the African continent beyond South Africa has been launched with Vuka Africa opening its first outlet in Maputo, Mozambique this month.
