SA short wins AiM film competition

A silent experimental documentary from South Africa won the second annual Africa in Motion (AiM) short film competition. Paul Emmanuel's 3SAI: A Rite of Passage was screened as part of the Africa in Motion Film Festival, held 22 October - 1 November 2009, at the UK African Film Festival, which takes place at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Shock figures of ad broadcasting errors

According to Deloitte, recent tracking of radio advertising broadcast on South African stations showed alarming results; an average of 9% of all radio ads booked are not broadcast as scheduled. Based on FM's AdFocus estimated figure of R3 billion on radio advertising in 2008, this error equates to R270 million erosion of ad spend per annum.

Africa almost a 'no-show' at MIPCOM

MIPCOM 2009, the international event for co-producing, buying and selling media content, was held last week in Cannes, France, 5 - 9 October 2009. African exhibitors were almost absent from the trade floor except for South Africa's National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF), which facilitated SA's presence in the market via the provision of a SA pavilion.

Moshito rated a success

Moshito 09 attracted nearly 500 delegates a day during its four days at Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg. All provinces except the Northern Cape were represented, together with Africa, Europe, Australia, North America and South America.

MIPCOM optimistic; deals and decisions abound

The 25th edition of MIPCOM ended last Friday, 9 October 2009, at Cannes and its representative industries seem set for a brighter 2010, as they announced deals and strategies. With over 12 000 delegates in Cannes, it registered an increase on the 11 500 delegates who attended MIPTV in April. Buyers were also out in force, with over 4000 in town compared to 3500 at MIPTV.

AiM 2009 competition shortlist announced

Seven short films by young African filmmakers have been shortlisted for the 2nd annual Africa in Motion (AiM) short film competition. All shortlisted films will be screened on Monday, 25 October 2009 as part of the Africa in Motion Film Festival, which takes place from 22 October - 1 November 2009 at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland.

African Film Library launched

Late last week, M-Net launched the African Film Library - the largest electronic library of feature films, shorts and documentaries from 50 years of African film production. Over the past three years, M-Net has been negotiating the rights to almost 600 works in English, French, Arabic and Portuguese and digitising them.

AiM 2009 launches festival programme

Africa in Motion (AiM) 2009, the UK African film festival, returns to Edinburgh's Filmhouse for its fourth edition, taking place from 22 October to 1 November 2009. The festival includes about 50 classic and contemporary films - long, short, fiction and documentary.

South Africans confident of 2010 success

Despite negative reports about the 2010 FIFA World Cup's ‘mediocre' marketing, an independent study has found that 89% of South Africans are well aware of the grandeur of the event and are confident that the soccer feast will be a resounding success, as the focus now shifts to the final draw to be held in Cape Town on 4 December 2009.
