ZAMBIA: Media resists calls for state regulation

LUSAKA: After almost a decade of fighting for self-regulation, the Zambian media may finally have its wishes entrenched with constitutional protection. The new draft constitution of the country prohibits legislation that would undermine media freedom and administrative behaviour that could hinder the development of the sector.

Zambia: MPs call for regulation of media

On 13 November 2008, the members of parliament in Zambia called for the regulation of media organisations through the use of statutory instruments as opposed to self-regulation because of the alleged biased media coverage of the just ended presidential by-election.

Zambia: Reports of the President's death 'erroneous'

The Zambian government insisted today that President Levy Mwanawasa was alive - denying media reports he had died in a Paris hospital - and described South African President Thabo Mbeki's minute of silence in respect of his counterpart at a rally in Pretoria as "erroneous".

Finalists in the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2008 Competition were announced today, 15 May 2008, by Azubuike Ishiekwene, Chair of the independent judging panel. This year the competition, now in its 13th year, received a record 1912 entries from 44 countries throughout the African continent, including French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa.
