US$75 million credit for Ugandan energy and ICT transformation

WASHINGTON: The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors approved a US$75 million International Development Association (IDA) credit early last week to finance the second phase of the Energy for Rural Transformation Program (ERT) in Uganda. The first phase of the ERT program was approved in 2001 and was completed in February, 2009.

Uganda resumes fibre optic cable construction

Sixteen new districts will be hooked onto Uganda's National Data Transmission Backbone in 2009 once construction of the second phase of the broadband cable begins. Over 1,500 kilometres of optical fibre cable will be constructed to extend the communication infrastructure to more towns.

Microsoft, USAID boost management of Uganda's education system

Uganda to host COMESA telecom regulators

The Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) is organising a one-day symposium to be attended by telecommunications regulators from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) member states. This is going to be one of the activities of the commission that would be marking its tenth anniversary on 22 May 2008. Other activities would include launching of a new corporate identity and the logo.

ICT sector registers double digit growth

Uganda's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector has registered a double digit growth since 2000 and grew by 33% in 2006/2007, according to a report released by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).
