International media rights groups have condemned the Ugandan government's actions against the press after last week's riots in Kampala. Four radio stations were closed and all live debate programmes were banned.

Financial journalists urged to be pro-active

Ugandan journalists have been urged to be more pro-active to increase the level of awareness and deepen the understanding of events at home and worldwide. David Sseppuuya, a former editor-in-chief of the New Vision called on business and financial journalists to lay a foundation for economic financial reporting by being more analytical.

Ugandan editors held over cartoon

Three editors from a Ugandan magazine were questioned yesterday over a cartoon criticising President Yoweri Museveni. The Criminal Investigations Directorate is investigating reports of sedition after a caricature of the president appeared in The Independent magazine last week.

Media CEO threatens to cut publicity

There's every reason for companies to cut back expenditure to survive the effects of the current global financial crisis. However, Robert Kabushenga, chief executive officer of New Vision Printing and Publishing Company has warned companies in Uganda against chopping off advertising expenses from their budget because it will put their popularity on the line.

Finalists in the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2008 Competition were announced today, 15 May 2008, by Azubuike Ishiekwene, Chair of the independent judging panel. This year the competition, now in its 13th year, received a record 1912 entries from 44 countries throughout the African continent, including French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa.
