L'Oréal opens new subsidiary in Kenya

At an inauguration ceremony held last week, L'Oréal opened its new subsidiary in Kenya, which will be the hub for expanding the group's activities in East Africa, a region which also includes Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and Ethiopia. The group's subsidiary in Nigeria opened in September.

Standard Bank Group secures finance for Helios Towers Tanzania

The Standard Bank Group has announced that they have secured financing worth US$85million for Helios Towers Tanzania Ltd (HTT), a subsidiary of Helios Towers Africa Ltd (HTA), to finance the next phase of its network of telecommunications towers across Tanzania.

A billion Africans and 50 million bank accounts. In South Africa, credit cards are used by only 16.5% of the population (2008). No African country comes close to 1% of total retail spend spent online - the magic figure which constitutes the tipping point for digital retail growth (in SA, ecommerce has a 0.4% share of the retail market, while in countries such as Egypt and Nigeria, the figure stands at 0.01%). No wonder, then, that the ecommerce market in Africa hasn't bloomed.

IFAD signs US$90.6 million loan agreement with Tanzania

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has signed an agreement for a US$90.6 million loan to Tanzania that will aim to enhance access to rural financial services and markets and promote private-sector development in the country, the United Nations rural poverty agency announced.

Engen acquires operations in Mauritius, Tanzania

Engen has concluded its purchase of two more country operations from Chevron in Africa and the Indian Ocean islands in Mauritius and Tanzania. This brings to five the number of successful acquisitions from its competitor, in terms of a package of seven sales and purchase agreements signed in August 2010.

Unemployment, inflation worries hit consumer confidence

NEW YORK, US: Consumer confidence fell in 25 out of 52 countries in Q4 2010 as hope for a global economic recovery evaporated at the end of last year, according to the latest edition of the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index, which tracks consumer confidence, major concerns and spending intentions among online consumers.
