The 'Re:spond' recycling service, launched in October 2011 in the east of Pretoria, is currently distributing 30 000 recycling bags weekly to households. It is hoping to increase this successful service to more suburbs in Tshwane.

Toy stores offer rewards for recycling

Toys R Us and Reggie's have launched an environmental campaign, Go Green, to encourage their customers to dispose of their batteries responsibly and avoid throwing them into their dustbins. Batteries contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals which contribute to soil contamination and water pollution.

International survey shows ignorance over carbon issues

US-based Epicor Software Corporation has announced the results of its first global carbon accounting survey, which shows that despite forthcoming legislation mandating carbon accounting, most companies are still lagging in their comprehension of carbon accounting as a whole and in the execution of carbon accounting initiatives.

WasteCon 2012 - urgent call for papers

The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA)'s waste management conference - WasteCon2012 is calling on all interested parties to submit papers for consideration in respect of original content for this year's conference before 1 February 2012. All submissions will go through a peer-review process carried out by a local review panel and each abstract will appear in the abstract book, which will be handed out at the conference.
