The end of 2011 had mining output decline for the fifth consecutive month; however results for the fourth quarter of 2011 showed an improvement over the previous quarter. Only four of the 12 mining sectors posted positive growth rates.

CSIR invents new water treatment

News24.com reports that the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed a new process to reclaim high-quality precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) from calcium-rich industrial solid waste. This new technology could potentially limit the impact of acid mine water - offering a solution to acid mine water in Gauteng.
