Higher testosterone levels in older women are associated with increased health risks

Postmenopausal women who have higher testosterone levels may be at greater risk of heart disease, insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome compared to women with lower testosterone levels, according to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). This new information is an important step, say researchers, in understanding the role that hormones play in women's health.

Early diagnosis of breast cancer is crucial

Being told you have cancer is a frightening experience. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women - 1 in 29 South African women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. In ‘Westernised' communities the incidence increases to 1 in 8 and if you have a close relative who had breast cancer, the risk increases to 1 in 6. With the economic upliftment of our population, the overall population risk will also increase. October is Breast Health Awareness Month and women throughout the world are looking at ways to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer and diagnosing it early to optimise treatment.

Women face higher risk of graft loss after liver transplantation compared to men

Although women with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are at lower risk for developing cirrhosis, researchers who compared outcomes for men and women after having liver transplantation found that women have a significantly increased risk of overall graft loss and graft loss from recurrent HCV than men.

Breast cancer has shifted from a taboo subject to one that is discussed freely in the media and in our daily lives. Young women are not immune to these messages. And the reality is that most girls have a first- or second-hand connection to someone with breast cancer - and limited age-appropriate information on the facts of breast cancer. As a result, it's not surprising that Breastcancer.org found misinformation to be prevalent among young women in the United States, promoting unnecessary fears.

Giving infertile women the chance to raise a child

The first successful egg donation in humans was achieved in 1984, but, while it represented a major breakthrough in modern reproductive treatment, egg donation was still out of reach for many desperate South African couples who were struggling to conceive naturally. Women between 21 and 34 can donate some of their eggs giving infertile women the chance to raise a child.
