Needle sharing rife among Egypt's drug users

“Sharing needles and syringes is very high in Egypt. This is very alarming because although only 1 percent of IDUs are HIV-positive, the high percentage of needle sharing may mean that we are sitting on a ticking bomb,” Ehab Kharrat, a senior programme adviser for the UNDP HIV/AIDS Regional Programme in the Arab States (HARPAS), told IRIN.

Animated HIV ads target the young

An animert (animated advert) that was praised at last week's International Animation Festival in France has been nominated by local youngsters for a Khuza Award, it was announced yesterday, Thursday, 18 June 2009. The animert was from South Africa's Scrutinize HIV/AIDS youth awareness campaign.

Marijuana effectiveness as an HIV self-care strategy

Those in the United States living with HIV/AIDS are more likely to use marijuana than those in Kenya, South Africa or Puerto Rica to alleviate their symptoms, according to a new study published in Clinical Nursing Research, published by SAGE.

Tea extracts hinders HIV transmission

WASHINGTON: A chemical found in green tea helps inhibit sexual transmission of the virus which causes AIDS, said a study on Tuesday, 19 May 2009 that recommends using the compound in vaginal creams to supplement antiretrovirals.

CAPE TOWN: International donors and African governments are likely to cut health budgets due to the global financial crisis. Health experts fear that increasing unemployment and poverty will lead to less food security and quality of nutrition, which will in turn put more stress on already weak health systems.

Mango partners with HIV&Me

Low cost airline Mango this week announced its partnership with NGO Regency's HIV education programme, HIV&Me. The programme, which focuses on prevention and education, reaches out to schools nationally with learner and teacher interventions to encourage young people to make informed choices about their health and sexual behaviour.
