Nigerian journalist shot dead

A journalist at a Nigerian daily newspaper has been shot dead by gunmen at his home in Lagos. Bayo Ohu, an assistant news editor at The Guardian, was shot earlier this week.

Nigeria hosts journalism and new media conference

Registration has commenced for the forthcoming Conference on Journalism and New Media Technologies in Africa organised by the School of Media and Communication of the Pan African University in Lagos, Nigeria. The conference is scheduled in Lagos from 23 - 27 August 2009 at the Honeywell Group Auditorium of the Pan African University's Lekki, Lagos campus.

CPJ urges Nigeria to probe police harassment, assault

Many African women journalists are constrained to working at the Women's Desk, where they cover light issues such as entertainment or home affairs. A rare exception is Nigerian journalist Clara Nwachukwu, who worked her way from the Women's Desk to becoming one of the few women who report on business and energy issues for national daily newspapers.

Allegations against NCC baseless, says Ndukwe

Recent attacks on the media in West Africa

Paul Abayomi Ogundeji, an editorial board member of the Lagos-based daily ThisDay, was shot dead on 17 August 2008 in a Lagos suburb while driving home. Nigerian police say unidentified armed robbers who had earlier stolen another car ambushed and shot him, but his family and others suspect police involvement, says Media Rights Agenda (MRA).

Finalists in the prestigious CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2008 Competition were announced today, 15 May 2008, by Azubuike Ishiekwene, Chair of the independent judging panel. This year the competition, now in its 13th year, received a record 1912 entries from 44 countries throughout the African continent, including French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa.

African nations agree to $1 billion Indian satellite project

A critical mass of countries are signing on to a plan for India to invest $1 billion in the Pan-African e-Network satellite project, a joint initiative with the Africa Union aimed at developing the region's information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure.
