Youth Day on 16 June commemorates the Soweto uprising in 1976 when high school students protested against the use of Afrikaans as the medium for instruction in their schools. Marking the day 38 years later, 15,000 young people, dressed in their school uniforms, attended an event organised by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in all nine provinces. In Gauteng, the event was held in Alexandra and Sebokeng. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God's annual Good Friday service was attended by thousands of members who travelled from regions throughout Gauteng and from other provinces to join one another at the Ellis Park precinct for an uplifting service of prayer and preaching. Active blood donors, all of whom are members of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), increased by 28.9% at the second mobile clinic held in Pretoria this year. This is particularly important as blood from a regular safe donor who maintains their infection-free status can be used as the safest priority blood and can be transfused to paediatric patients. The importance of education, awareness and early detection in diagnosing and treating cancer and HIV/Aids successfully, was highlighted by haematology and haemotherapy specialist Dr Albertina Vieira who visited South Africa in July 2012.
