On Thursday, 10 November 2011, the fourth annual Bookmarks Awards, the digital industries awards evening and back-slap, was a vast improvement over last year's chaotic event (read Award-show behaving badly), when several hundred hangers-on crashed the awards evening and the MC Don Packett lost control and his cool.

The Bookmarks award judging is done and dusted, and by Thursday evening, 10 November 2011, ad land will know who has won what in the only award show dedicated to rewarding creativity and effectiveness in SA's digital marketing and publishing industries. The annual Bookmark Awards, which awards digital marketing and publishing excellence, seems to have started finding its feet on the local awards circuit. It has grown from 120 entries at its launch in 2008 to 229 in 2009 and finally reached the 400 mark in 2010. It has also become known for its uncompromising stand against giving out awards just for the sake of it.

The Bookmarks awards has received 400 separate entries across the agency and publisher categories in 2010. This is nearly double the 229 entries received in 2009. In total, 42 agencies and 32 publishers submitted entries for the 43 award categories this year.

South African publishers are facing increasing pressure from advertisers to adopt a pricing model based on the clickthrough rate on banner ads, rather than the more traditional CPM (cost per mille or cost per thousand), pricing model, which is based on a fixed price for every 1000 impressions served.
