100 000 year old art studio uncovered in SA
Researchers believe that two shells containing a primitive paint mixture may be the remnants of a 100 000 year old art studio. The abalone shells held a paste containing ochre, an earthy iron ore offering yellow or red hues, which may have been used for painting or body decoration, said the study in the journal "Science". Meerkats can identify each other by voice
Researchers recorded a range of meerkat vocal sounds and played them to wild meerkats in South Africa's Kalahari Desert. They now say that meerkats can identify one another by voice alone, matching the way humans recognise familiar tones. Meerkats may be the only non-primate species to have developed this ability. South Africans are overweight - survey
South Africans weigh in as the third fattest nation on earth. A survey done in 2010 by Glaxo SmithKline has found that 61% of the South African population are overweight or morbidly obese. In addition to this survey, a study done by the Medical Research Council in 2007 found that 56% of adult women and 29% of adult men in South Africa were overweight or obese. Read more >>
