A good laugh and all smiles

Douglas Kruger introduces his 'Relentlessly Relevant' series with lessons on innovation from a Soweto street vendor who offers run-over bunny chow - yes, "the man will wrap it in wax paper, hurl it onto the highway and wait for a truck to drive over it at 120 kph ... if you ask nicely." Based on his new book, Kruger begins to unpack practical ways to innovate and become wealthy as a result. Leading by example, SA Florist founders Nicholas Wallander and Fraser Black - who recently impressed crowds at Tech4Africa with their Dragons' Den South Africa success story - chat to Leigh Andrews about the effect of the internet on e-commerce and bricks and mortar.

Woolworths appoints long-time employee Zyda Rylands as its new CEO, who will take responsibility for the entire food and clothing business across the country and the continent as a whole.

Louise Marsland questions Claude Hanan on the Superbalist 100, which celebrates young talent across the creative spectrum. He says, "We're not saving lives but we are in the business of making people happy." Adopting a similar mindset, Brandon Bester explains the science behind the smile, and how a simple gesture can influence customer decision-making.

And Lindt & Sprüngli hits the sweet spot. Chocoholics rejoice at the opening of the Swiss chocolatier's first boutique in South Africa, and the announcement by Beyers Chocolates, that Sweetie Pie is now available in two new flavours. While shopaholics get their Cotton On on, as the Australian retail chain plans to open another 40 stores in SA before Christmas. "The country's apparel shoppers have been little deterred by rising costs and debt - with the value and budget segment remaining particularly resilient," reports Zeenat Moorad.
