Marketing & Media South Africa

Celebrating 10 years of Design Indaba coverage

Last week Design Indaba pulled off another pretty faultless series of design events. As media partner to the event, Bizcommunity this year celebrates 10 years of bringing you indepth design opinion coverage with a bumper edition.

Read about the changing face of urban Africa and get daily conference overviews of local and international designers at the top of their game. Former editor of Marketing Mix Luise Allemann submits guest editorial opinion from the Johannesburg event, with additional reportage from our stalwart Biz content team Sindy Peters, Ilse van den Berg, Ruth Cooper and Terry Levin.

Enjoy our insider pics from the media lounge and Design Indaba Expo fashion shows.

Please feel free to join the conversation with your opinions on www.facebook/bizcommunity, in the comments sections on the site or on Twitter @bizcommunity. If you would like to send any Design Indaba feedback or feel inspired to contribute to Bizcommunity, we welcome your input.

Have a great week!

Design Indaba news
[Design Indaba 2014] Overview - Poetry in motion
[Terry Levin] Anyone in the creative communications milieu at this stage of 2014 will tell you the importance of storytelling and story-making as a creative trend, this year other kinds of storytelling genres emerged. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] Inside the Expo
[Shan Radcliffe] The Design Indaba 2014 Expo was once again a feast for the eyes and mind, while providing creatives from all walks of life the opportunity to showcase their crafts on an internationally-attended playing field. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] What's in the box Lauren Beukes?
[Ruth Cooper] How does one define a designer these days? Designers are so much more than building constructors, typography poets and chair and vase crafters. Designers are creators, activists, humanitarians, revolutionaries, risk takers, visionaries. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] "Let's design the future of urban Africa" - Issa Diabate
[Terry Levin] Those who did arrive early on Friday at the Design Indaba were rewarded by listening to Issa Diabate, who apparently even trended on Twitter during his presentation. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] Thoughts from creativity's Mount Olympus
[Luise Allemann] Attendees at this year's Design Indaba were treated to some seriously good insights from legendary creative director Marcello Serpa, who is probably best known for being the 'godfather' of the Havaianas flip flop brand. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] From design to advertising
[Ilse van den Berg] At a creative conference you always expect to hear from pros in the industry, but boy, was Marcello Serpa a treat on day two of Design Indaba. (video) Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] A sense of place
[Terry Levin] Almost every Design Indaba presenter refers to their country or city of origin as being formative to the success of their design approach and ethos. The evidence stacks up annually as one case study after the next demonstrates that the best design solutions grow out of a sense of place, context and location and are fundamental to inspiration. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] The man who joined a band and came back an architect
[Luise Allemann] Not many conference speakers begin their presentation playing the drums, but world renowned Mexican architect Michel Rojkind did just that on the second day of the 2014 Design Indaba. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] The democratisation of design
[Luise Allemann] South Africa's celebration of 20 years of democracy resonated loudly at the first day of the 2014 Design Indaba, namely the democratisation of the design process - a breaking down of barriers, an attitude of process be damned and an industry where projects don't stick to predefined borders or limitations. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] UK Starchitect for landmark V&A CT development
[Terry Levin] Easily the most mythical of all designers - part alchemist, part shaman, with the sensibilities and integrity of the Dalai Lama, Thomas Heatherwick was back on the Indaba stage after an absence of nine years. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] Modular phones, bioprinting and touching strangers
[Sindy Peters] There's one slot at Design Indaba I implore you never to miss, and that's the Pecha Kucha presentations. Seven top graduates from around the world presented their projects at this year's event, but three stood out - particularly in the simulcast auditorium where they all received a rousing applause. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] It's getting crowded in here
[Terry Levin] The Cape Town Design Indaba running this week from 26-28 February 2014 at the CTICC is celebrating its 20th year in existence, coinciding with 20 years of South African democracy. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] Nobody needs a logo anymore
[Terry Levin] The hard fact is, when it comes to civic and even corporate design - nobody needs a logo anymore - they need a system. Read more >>

[Design Indaba 2014] People want cities for people
[Ilse van den Berg] Cities around the world all have one particular thing in common - they are made up of people. The problem is though that most cities have not been built to accommodate people - but to accommodate cars and traffic. (video) Read more >>
