Growing anger over ASA refusal to rule on govt ads promoting POIB

[Chris Moerdyk] The refusal by the Advertising Standards Authority to rule on complaints about Government advertisements promoting the Protection of Information Bill has fuelled growing anger in the media and marketing industry over inconsistencies and selective application of regulations. [video]

Does proudly South African mean buy South African?

[Chris Moerdyk] I always find it amusing when a national furore is created by a sporting body's decision to source clothing and equipment overseas. Like our official sports confederation and Olympic Games body, SASCOC, did a few weeks ago when it announced that our Olympic Games kit would be supplied from China.

Is marketing moving with the times?

[Chris Moerdyk] A few years ago I calculated that, every year in South Africa, roughly R50 billion was wasted on ill-conceived or just plain bad marketing. So, have things improved? Is marketing still efficient or continuing to shed money as though there was no tomorrow?

Chris Moerdyk commented on Why Meropa won't be at the PR awards, again...
I would agree that all awards, PR, Advertising should be scrapped for precisely the reason you suggest, Peter. HOWEVER, PR and Ads agency staff take such a lot of crap from their bosses and clients that at least awards give them a few brief moments of glory. Its good internal PR - that's the only value.

Killing the consumer with absurdity

[Chris Moerdyk] I keep thinking about that cabinet minister who, a few weeks ago, said that e-tolls wouldn't hurt the poor because the rich would pay for it all. What he didn't realise of course, was that when the rich pay the tolls, they put it on their expense accounts or add it to their truck fleet operating costs and eventually pass it on to the consumer. Including the poor consumer.

Media's Malema dilemma

[Chris Moerdyk] When Julius Malema's myriad appeals eventually run out and assuming he decides to sit out his time in the ANC's sin-bin, it is going to be fascinating to see how South Africa's news media treats him.

Logical logistics needed for managing Mandela media mayhem

[Chris Moerdyk] The Presidency, the ANC and Government might as well get used to the fact, sooner rather than later, that as the 93-year-old Nelson Mandela gets older and more frail, the media frenzy will increase from mild hysteria right now to complete and utter illogical chaos.

Is luring back the Loeries CEO all that alluring?

[Chris Moerdyk] Either the Loeries board wants press coverage or it doesn't. It can't just insist on the nice bits.

Time for mass-media cooperation but not collusion

[Chris Moerdyk] There is so much competition among media owners in South Africa these days that you can almost smell blood. In fact, in many instances, it has moved beyond bloody one-upmanship to desperate survival tactics. So, it will probably sound contradictory if not a little silly to suggest, as I have done in the past, that there is now no better time for competing media to start co-operating with each other.

Magnificent Madikwe

[Chris Moerdyk] There is no greater feeling of contentment than standing stark naked on your own private deck surveying an unbroken vista of pristine Africa, following an early morning skinny dip in your own private plunge pool and an invigorating outside shower. Well this is one place you might think of doing it... Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge.
