Not an April Fool's joke: Hayibo lives!

[Mandy de Waal] Satire-loving South Africans were heart-broken when Hayibo.com closed shop seven months ago. Well, there's bad news and good news in the offing. The bad news for foot-in-mouth politicians is they're back, and the good news for the rest of us that this is no April Fool's joke.

Government - SA's most ambitious media baron

[Mandy de Waal] Not satisfied with just owning this country's biggest broadcaster, the state is set to launch what will be South Africa's biggest circulation newspaper at a print price tag of well above R1 million an issue. Critics warn of printing for pulp, of a government that has not done its homework, but also of a state that's knee-jerking politically and seriously damaging media diversity in the process

ZAnews and the irony of local satire facing extinction

[Mandy de Waal] South African satire looks set to become a highly endangered species. First Hayibo bit the dust because it couldn't raise funding; next, ZAnews has stalled season four of its puppet parodies and is looking for moola after news that its Kulula sponsorship was radically cut. Now it is looking for corporate sponsors with a spine.

Bono, Malema and the headlines that stirred all the rage

[Mandy de Waal] U2 frontman Bono was the target of wide-scale derision this weekend after a story about him apparently supporting Julius Malema and that infamous "shoot the boer" liberation song flamed across South Africa - and then circled the globe. Nazeem Howa: new kid on the block at The New Age

[Mandy de Waal] There's still no news about when The New Age will be rolling off the presses. But with the appointment of Nazeem Howa as chief executive of TNA Media, the company is at least making progress in filling key positions. If his optimism is well-founded, we shouldn't have too much longer to wait before paper hits the newsstands.

A fistful of Zim dollars trumps ethics: Avusa in distribution deal with Mugabe Media Inc

[Mandy de Waal] With advertising revenues down and profits plunging, it appears Avusa's management is prepared to do just about anything, even if this means striking a deal with Bob Mugabe's propaganda machine. Something the brave journos of Sunday Times wouldn't feel great about - if only they knew.

SABC News, a law unto itself

[Mandy de Waal] Accused of sacrificing its public accountability, editorial policy and of moving ever closer to becoming a de facto state broadcaster, the SABC looked dangerously like it was being used by Robert Gumede in his war against the Mail & Guardian. Yet the SABC is defiant, saying it doesn't need to explain its editorial policy or news decisions to anyone. Really?
