SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] This Donavan Marsh-directed coming-of-age movie is based on the first of the popular Spud series of books by John van de Ruit. It's about a young boy (John Milton, or Spud, played by Troye Sivan) who goes to boarding school in Kwazulu-Natal on a scholarship and experiences many things like friendship, crushes, awkwardness and growing up.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] Complicite's A Disappearing Number introduces us to the art and beauty of mathematics. The second season of the National Theatre Live in the UK has started, which means some more interesting plays coming to cinemas in SA.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] I had no idea what to expect from Going the Distance. I hadn't heard very much about it, and while I like both Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, they were both in the very disappointing He's Just Not That Into You.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] I never watched The A-Team as a child, so I was lucky to enter this movie with a blank slate. Granted, I probably missed a whole bunch of in-jokes, but at least I wasn't muttering about how it didn't stack up.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] London Assurance, marking the end of the inaugural NT Live/Ster Kinekor Live Theatre season, has the honour of being both high-brow and low-brow. High-brow, because it was written in 1841 by Dion Boucicault, so some of the vocabulary and wit requires a sharp mind to keep up. Low-brow because, well, many of the shots are cheap.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] The Big Four concert is, arguably, the biggest event in thrash metal recently. Considered the four most influential bands in thrash metal, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica all performed, for the first time, on one stage at Bulgaria's Sonisphere.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] Since hearing about Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, I had a desire to see it. And since hearing that after Heath Ledger's death, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell would all fill in to complete his unfinished scenes (and would give their earnings to Ledger's baby daughter), it became a need to see it.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] While entertaining, former Carte Blanche presenter Bonita G's G-Rebellion at Parker's Comedy and Jive at Montecasino was not what I'd hoped. As much as I wanted to love this performance, I didn't.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] I once thought I was a movie snob, but I will admit I laughed out loud at this one. The kind of laugh that propels your torso forward in the chair.

SOUTH AFRICA [Patricia Pieterse] The Habit of Art was my first experience with Ster-Kinekor's live theatre, and I would definitely go again. The idea is very clever - it dispenses quality theatre, at a movie ticket price, to an audience that would not have seen this sort of thing without travel.
