[Jana van Heerden] Lumberjacking is one of those super-manly professions that helps advertisers to sell shaving cream and other masculine paraphernalia. They wear flannel shirts strategically unbuttoned to show some chest hair and occasionally even chop wood. Now I have been to many festivals around our fair country, including even a Sandstone Festival, and with my limited and - I admit - possibly stereotypical image of a lumberjack, it made perfect sense to throw a festival in honour of this outstanding vocation.

A bite-sized RAMfest

[Jana van Heerden] The biggest news on the festival calendar is usually the announcement of the international acts for RAMfest. This year the change of set-up was the hot topic. The news that the three-day festival had been slashed down to a single day was greeted with abject horror in Cape Town, where it had always been a three-day event, although Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth were thrilled to be invited to the party alongside Durban and Joburg. Then the announcement of the United Nations of international line-ups brought the focus right back to the music.

Up The Creek, a different kind of festival

[Jana van Heerden] Every music festival has its little something that makes it unique. Up The Creek's USP is that it is awesome; it's like being on holiday. Only you can (legally) drink heavily alcohol-infused slushies on the beach and the entertainment is a real live act and not some obscure R'n'B act blaring from a cellphone speaker 10 metres away.

Bovim creates Queen At The Ballet

[Jana van Heerden] Queen At The Ballet is a tribute to Freddie Mercury created by choreographer Sean Bovim, whose dance company, Bovim Ballet, interprets the classic art form from a fresh point of view. By adding modern elements, such as rock music and even break dancing, the company succeeds in opening up ballet to a new audience.
