Josh Adler is a self-proclaimed "social impact explorer", trying to figure out how best leverage the nexus of business, technology and social development to create new and meaningful public value. A former tech entrepreneur, he is currently director for the Centre for Entrepreneurial Leadership (www.anzisha.org) at the African Leadership Academy (www.africanleadershipacademy.org, @ALAcademy).
Josh spent over a decade at the heart of South Africa's digital industry, first as the founder and editor of Music Industry Online, and then as CEO of Prefix Technologies - where he and his partners built some of South Africa's most relied-upon content management and delivery software tools, including Preditor CMS and pMailer (now Everlytic - www.everlytic.com). He was also head of measurement of the Digital Media & Marketing Association (DMMA) 2009-2011, where he drove the adoption of a more affordable and accessible internet audience currency.
Along the way, Josh has been fortunate to participate in a few leadership development programmes including Brightest Young Minds (2001), Common Purpose (2003), NEXUS at Gibs (2004) and the Cambridge Programme for Sustainable Industry (2007). In 2009, he and his business partner were recognized as "high-impact" entrepreneurs by Endeavor (www.endeavor.org).
In 2011, Josh left the world of business to study International Development at the University of Geneva's IOMBA program in Switzerland. While there, he found his interests focusing upon the role of business in society and measuring development impact, particularly education. He is now a strong Open Data user and advocate.
On his return to South Africa, Josh joined UNDP's Africa Facility for Inclusive Markets (AFIM), where he researched value chain opportunities for low income communities within the retail and extractive industries sectors.
Josh currently serves on the boards of the companies he founded, as well as a few young startups, and is a trustee to the Buyani Education Trust.

[Josh Adler] I'm quite new to education, but completely immersed and have much to say. I thought I'd focus my crystal ball on a broad range of education industry issues, and wanted to avoid at all costs penning another "Have you heard about Khan Academy?" piece, (But now that that's done)...
[Josh Adler] It's over and I'm pretty knackered. I can happily blame the few guys I went out with last night; an evening rounding off on a high note what has been an interesting conference experience. The conversation into the early hours was deep and intellectual, focusing mainly on past episodes of Top Gear, horseracing and worst cities in the world, while some of us lost money at the roulette table.
[Josh Adler] I'd hoped to blog throughout the proceedings, but while I find the idea of documenting and tweeting stuff in real time novel and webby, you cannot escape the fact that conferences are about person-to-person networking in the real-world! In this way, I suppose I'm not a geek at all, and I love to work an event like this very hard, getting to the people I need to and engaging in the conversations.
[Josh Adler] I arrived in Lisbon and got an email as soon as I got to the hotel requesting my participation in a round-table chat focused on emerging market measurement for Africa and the Middle East. So much for standing for silently on the sidelines! A quick check-in and I was off to register at the conference venue with my Bookmarks 2008 t-shirt to make me easy to spot! Turns out I was a little underdressed. Measurement is the business side of media - even the techies seemed to be in suits yesterday!
[Josh Adler] It’s freezing, and it’s early. I stepped off the plane into transit in Zurich, and am certain I saw snow on the ground around the tarmac. The trick is to get warm liquid into you quickly, and a seat that is more of a couch. Perfect for warming up and booting up to pound out some mail and the odd blog post before my flight to Lisbon.

I'm sitting in the lounge about to fly off to Portugal for the I-COM summit (International Conference on Online Media Measurement), an event that takes place every two years and seems to attract everyone who's anyone in the world of "Internet audience measurement". A hefty term, and the easiest way to dumb it down is to say that we're here to try and better understand the best ways to measure what on earth goes on with visitor activity to the ever-changing world of web, mobile and social media.
