Present and past stars jeté onto the stage for glam 75th year ballet gala

There's no stopping former Capab Ballet principal ballerina Juanita Yazbek, who, while pregnant, is still running her interior design company, fulfilling her duties as a committee member of Friends at Cape Town City Ballet Balletomanes, choreographing work for Cape Town City Ballet's 75th anniversary gala, organising catering and décor for the after party, and working out daily at the gym. Only her Latin American dance classes are on the back burner until her baby is born! 16 Nov 2009 10:57

New benchmark for Romeo and Juliet

As a film and theatre lover, I can be as skeptical as the next person when it comes to critics' reviews. They represent individual opinions, educated or otherwise, and at the end of the day, people should make up their own minds. So in the preparation for my interview with Dada Masilo earlier this year, I was surprised to see how many rave reviews she had received for her contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet, the product of her 2008 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance, which premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. 30 Oct 2009 14:42

Sentimientos at the Artscape

Friends at Cape Town City Ballet Balletomanes Awards

Senior principal dancers Megan Swart and Robin van Wyk are the winners of the main category of the Friends at Cape Town City Ballet Balletomanes Awards. Established in 1976, the awards are presented in recognition of outstanding artistic endeavours, and in appreciation of the hours of pleasure afforded throughout the year to members of the society. Recipients are determined by vote; each year, society members are invited to vote for two dancers - one woman and one man - to be the recipients of the Balletomanes Awards. 27 Oct 2009 16:03

Exploring the joy of movement with SAIM

Jori Snell of Baba Yaga Theatre is offering dancers, movers, performers and educators from the performance industry an amazing opportunity to learn about contact improvisation through an initiative she devised in collaboration with UCT School of Dance, Stellenbosch University Drama Department and Illinois University. It's the first South African Improvisation Meeting (SAIM) comprising workshops, now under way at the UCT School of Dance, facilitated by some of the leading exponents of this art: Kirstie Simson (Chicago) and Bo Madvig (Denmark). Both are directly associated with contact improvisation and improvisation pioneers like Steve Paxton and Julyen Hamilton. 23 Sep 2009 15:32

iKapa shines in Stadium

iKapa Dance Theatre has pulled off an ambitious full-length performance of Andile Sotiya's Stadium with great aplomb, which the opening night audience at Cape Town's Artscape Theatre gave due credit. Words of admiration and praise could be heard around me as the small cast of six dancers enjoyed their standing ovation at the end of the hour-long piece. 3 Jul 2009 11:03
