AfrikaBurn: fiery embers of Tankwa Town

[Ruth Cooper] All good stories should include a worthwhile journey and a journey to the arid semi-desert, mood-swinging Karoo is no stroll on the promenade. It takes preparation; it takes perseverance and, most of all, a high level of concentration.

Talking thrash with Metallica's Robert Trujillo

[Ruth Cooper] It's been seven years since Metallica first head banged into South Africa, headlining for the now-defunct My Coke Fest, and it's most probably been seven years too long for their die-hard fans. We were lucky enough to attend round one at the Belville Velodrome on Wednesday night, 24 April 2013, and were even luckier to meet and interview bassist Robert Trujillo a mere hour before their performance.

Shortstraw scratch your back with new album

[Ruth Cooper] The fun-loving five of Joburg indie pop band Shortstraw, most well-known for nurturing deep man-love for Keanu Reeves, have just released their second album; Goodmorning, Sunshine for (almost) free download. We chat to singer/ guitarist Alastair Thomas ahead of their nationwide tour about said album, opening for The Kooks and an intense dislike for emoticons ;)

Flippin' Kooky

[Ruth Cooper] Just as sought after as a magical golden ticket to the Willy Wonka Factory so were those elusive #5GumExperience tickets. With three successful 5 Gum party activations on their CV, indie on the menu, a top-secret venue and award-winning British band The Kooks as headliner it was no wonder that the procurement of those free tickets made many a fan a little "Kooky".

Holi moli

[Ruth Cooper] It's amazing how quickly those pretty lumo colours turn to a sludgy orange. Like battle- torn Amazonian savages did we look, when on the way back from Holi One, South Africa's equivalent to India's Hindu Holi spring festival of colour, we decided to stop for Chinese - surely startling the lone cashier at the Buitenkant take-away.

Living the detour - Interview with Jet Black Camaro

[Ruth Cooper] You might have thought that that real rock 'n' roll, ballsy, intelligently conscious sound had died a sadly quiet death many years ago, perishing especially so from the hipster-centric generation and gentrification. However the bluesy, soulful rock of Jet Black Camaro might just change your mind.

MiNNAAR's volcanic birth

[Ruth Cooper] Brother-and-sister duo Louis and Magdalene Minnaar have recently combined their creatively blessed genetics and extensive musical experiences in the form of musical project MiNNAAR. With their "Volcano" EP freshly released, we decided to find out a little bit more about this original group.

A bitter pill

[Ruth Cooper] The holy trinity power house team of, Jaco van der Merwe, Louis Minaar and Peach van Pletzen are truly a combined force to be reckoned with. Jaco's lazy gruff rapping style and cleverly conscious lyrics, Peach's multi-instrumentalist multi- talent tsunami and Louis' brilliant creative mind and skill create a super group of note. The only baffling thing is the fact that Bittereinder are not better acknowledged and celebrated. Perhaps now with second album offering "Die Dinkdansmasjien" things will shift. The SA music industry seems to be nodding their heads in appreciation and time to the beat.

"Pyramid" track by track

[Ruth Cooper] "Pyramid", The Plastics' second studio album, includes both that familiar upbeat indie sound that Plastic fans have come to love as well as a fresh new direction in sound: darker, trippier, sexier and fairly psychedelically retro. Slip on those dancing shoes, consume something mind expanding and enjoy.
