Media Awards 2012: Never a dull moment

[Gill Moodie] The looming Mangaung conference meant that ANC politics was THE big story of 2012 while the news hounds were kept very, very busy covering tumultuous events such as the numerous service-delivery and wage protests throughout the country and the Marikana massacre.

Inevitable that Caxton and I would fall out - Alec Hogg

[Gill Moodie] Many in the industry really felt for Alec Hogg in October when he walked away from Moneyweb, the company he built from nothing into a highly respected player in the media industry. Hogg tells Bizcommunity why he's philosophical about the move, what he's doing with his year's restraint of trade and what was so different about the values of majority shareholder Caxton and his own that made it impossible for him to stay on as Moneyweb CEO and board member.

If used wisely, Twitter can be very wise

[Gill Moodie] I confess: I turn to Twitter and Facebook in the wee hours when I can't sleep - and last night a rather interesting thing happened.

Wertheim Aymés snapping up Stuff

[Gill Moodie] What a coup for Gisèle Wertheim Aymés to have snapped up Stuff magazine's licence - and it's also heartening news for independent publishers and media owners. Going with Wertheim Aymés is Stuff editor Toby Shapshak, who has overseen the growth of this little star of a magazine since its launch in SA in 2007.

RamsayMedia stays true to 360 degree strategy

[Gill Moodie] One often gets the sense that some print-media companies' response to the dramatic changes in the industry amounts to little more than putting out fires - rather than crafting a strategy for the future. RamsayMedia started implementing its strategy to become multi-platform and diversify income to reduce reliance on advertising revenue a few years back. I caught up with RamsayMedia MD Stuart Lowe, to find out how it's going.

Social network: It won't pay if you don't play

[Gill Moodie] There are no experts on Twitter and Facebook and I'd do a careful check on the credentials of any "consultant" you might be thinking of paying to advise your company or train your staff on how best to use them.

Gill Moodie commented on So long and thanks for all the awards
Hi all... I thought you'd appreciate a little update here (October 2012): except for two people, all the members of this amazing little team have either subsequently left the Dispatch or were retrenched.

According to the latest available ABC figures (for the 2nd quarter of 2012), the Dispatch's digital sales are at 355.

Meanwhile, the paper under its most recent editor, Brendan Boyle, has taken back control of the website and is now at the start of the lengthy process of trying to rebuild the Dispatch's website into something special again.

What a crying shame that the passion and skills and website traffic and goodwill were squandered in the first place!
