It's a short ride with your own wind in your sails

[Vincent Maher] Let's debate the value of anchors to the "real world" for digital businesses and why hyper-reality leads to verbal incontinence, as there's a kind of certainty and humility that you find in people who do business online but are still firmly grounded in the world of bricks and mortar.

Google turns whole web into social network

[Vincent Maher] It was just a matter of time before Google started to leverage the massive base of Google accounts to connect everyone together. As usual, this new Google project is ambitious - instead of creating a new social network as a destination site, the new Friend Connect service takes the network to where the people already are - on blogs and websites.

How newspapers, mobile media can work together - but probably won't

[Vincent Maher] With MTN bringing up its location lookup service, and Vodacom's already in place, it now means that media companies can deliver news targeted at a Personal Content Area based on the user's actual location. Whereas personalisation has mostly gone unused on the desktop web, I think people will be more likely to use a service that filters news based on their location.

Web 3.0 is only partly about semantics

Newspapers, social media a good fit

[Vincent Maher] Since early 2005 when I started working with Colin Daniels at the Rhodes New Media Lab, my thinking about the web has been saturated by the language, principles and ideals of Web 2.0 and specifically the sub-set of uses we call "social media". So I had to laugh at the provocative piece written by Paul Jacobson for The Times the other week, called Social Media is Dead.

Where is social media going?

[Vincent Maher] I have been thinking about this issue since I was at the New Media Lab at Rhodes and sometimes have been critical of the aggressive stance the citizen journalism pundits have taken towards the traditional media. I still hold the same position, that citizen journalism is over-hyped.
