Teraco launches Africa Cloud eXchange

Isando, Johannesburg based Teraco Data Environments, Africa's first provider of vendor neutral data centres, announced the launch of the Africa Cloud eXchange (ACX), providing a secure data centre environment where cloud providers can enable access to a vendor-neutral co-location space for sharing and selling cloud services, ITWeb reports.

Due to the lack of power and general infrastructure around the continent, South Africa has the opportunity to become a central hub for international access providers and support the rest of Africa.

Due to the rapid growth in IT requirements, Africa needs to find a way to keep up with the demand, Lex van Wyk, MD of Teraco Data Environments says. With additional fibre capacity now available along the East and West coasts, Teraco can offer connectivity to all the undersea cables through 28 combined landing points along the East and West coasts of the continent, as well as all major carriers operating in SA and several active cloud providers. "This, in effect, means the Africa Cloud eXchange is already in operation," van Wyk told ITWeb.
