Experts take samples from whale shark

According to Pakistan's The International News, experts from various provincial research institutes took samples on Monday, 4 February 2013, from the carcass of a whale shark that was caught last week by local fishermen some 70 nautical miles from Karachi, Pakistan.

Marine Fisheries Department Director General Shaukat Hussain said experts from the National Institute of Oceanography, the Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, the University of Karachi's Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology and Institute of Marine Science, the Sindh Fisheries Department, and the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) took the samples.

He said the vertebrae of the whale shark would be sent to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Canada to determine the age and cause of death of the mammoth fish.
