Building plans up 2,5%

The real value of building plans passed (at constant 2010 prices) increased year-on-year by 2.3% to R1,192.9m between January and October this year.

The biggest increase was reported for residential buildings (5.2% or R1.2bn)‚ followed by additions and alterations (2.7% or R445.6m).

The decrease reported for non-residential buildings of 3.5% or R453.6m counter-acted the increases.

The seasonally adjusted real value of recorded building plans passed increased by 6.7% in the three months ended October 2012 compared with the previous three months.

The biggest increase was reported for residential buildings, up 10.2%‚ followed by non-residential buildings, up 8.5% and additions and alterations up 0.7%.

The value of buildings completed (at current prices) increased by 4.0% (R1‚405.9m) between January and October.

Increases were reported for non-residential buildings, which were up 12.4% or R1.049bn and residential buildings that were 7.3% higher and worth R1‚253.6m‚ while a decrease was reported for additions and alterations, which fell by 9.4% or R896.8m for the period.

Six provinces reported year-on-year increases in the value of buildings completed during January to October 2012.

The year-on-year increase was dominated by Gauteng (contributing 5.5 percentage points or R1‚925.8m). A large decrease was reported in KwaZulu-Natal (contributing -2.8 percentage points or -R984.9m).

The real value of buildings completed (at constant 2010 prices) decreased year-on-year by 1.1% (-R378.6m) between January and October.

A large decrease was reported for additions and alterations (-13.7% or -R1‚313.3m)‚ while increases were reported for non-residential buildings (8.1% or R700.8m) and residential buildings (1.4% or R233.9m) during the period.
