Festive season celebrations on the Square

This year's Carols on the Square on 2 December will not only celebrate the festive season but in the wake of World Aids Day (1 December), will also be celebrating the life and legacy of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen.

"We celebrate life on the Square," says Nelson Mandela Square Manager Sharon Swain, "and the combination of the traditional Carol message of peace, harmony and hope with a positive message of nation building and commitment to each other as South Africans is an inspirational one at this time of the year."

Over the past years Nelson Mandela Square's iconic Carols on the Square has successfully mixed traditional Carols with performances by South African's best known performers and bands resulting in concerts with an exciting mix of pop and tradition and this year will be no different.

Conductor Richard Cock will again take centre stage, joined by The Symphony Choir of Johannesburg, The Joburg Festival Orchestra and the Mzansi Youth Choir to combine a vibrant African influence with traditional festive cheer.

Soloists will include the powerful Joseph Clark who was hailed by Brian May, the guitarist from Queen, as "more Freddie than Freddie" and Friedel Mitas, an aspiring young soprano from Cape Town. Together they will be blowing audiences away with their rousing performances of traditional Christmas carols including The first Nowell and Hark the Herald Angels Sing to all the Queen favourites including Somebody to Love and the famous Barcelona.

So gather your friends and family, clear your throat and join in on the Square for a festive sing-along of your favourite Carols and the best of Queen. The date to diarise is 2 December. The concert is free and starts at 5pm. Programmes will be sold in aid of the Topsy Foundation. (And don't worry about the weather - the marquee will take care of that!)

Be there early to enjoy a delicious meal with family and friends in one of the many restaurants around the Square or indulge in some late night shopping. After all, it is the season to be jolly!
